Adela of Blois Short Biography
Adela was born in Normandy around 1067, the daughter of King William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. Very little is known of her early life, but it is known that she was educated and could understand Latin.
At the age of 15 years she married Stephen, son of Theobald III of Blois. The couple had a total of 11 children.
In 1096, Adela’s husband joined the first Crusade. While he was away, Adela acted as regent in Blois. In 1101, Stephen embarked on a second Crusade but was killed in Battle in 1102. He was succeeded by his son Theobald. As Theobald was a minor, Adela acted as regent a second time until he came of age.
In 1111, Adela sent her son Stephen to the court of her brother, Henry I, King of England. He was one of the young men who surrounded Henry’s heir, William Adelin. In 1520 William Adelin and a large number of his friends sailed to England on the White Ship. Stephen was ill and did not sail in the same ship. The White Ship sank just off the coast of Barflour and all on board were killed including Henry I’s heir.
In 1120, Adela retired from public life and became a nun. Her son, Stephen succeeded her brother Henry to become King of England. Adela of Blois died on 8th March 1137.
