Aelfflaed Short Biography
Aelfflaed is believed to be the daughter of Ealdorman Aethelhelm of Wiltshire. Nothing is known of her life before her marriage to King Edward the Elder around 901.
She was Edward’s second wife and the couple had six children:
Aelfweard who is believed to have briefly been king in 924
Edwin, who drowned in 933,
Eadgifu, who married Charles III of Western Francia,
Eadgyth, who married Otto the Great of Germany,
Eadflaed,
Eadhild
It is believed that Aelfflaed died around 920 because King Edward remarried and his first son by his third wife was born in 921. She was buried in Winchester Cathedral.
