Aelfhelm of York was the son of Wulfrun, a wealthy noblewoman and landowner. Details of his father are not known, but he is known to have had a brother, Wulfric Spot who died in battle around 1004. He became Ealdorman of York / South Northumbria around 994.
Aelfhelm married a lady by the name of Wulfrun and they had three children. Their daughter, Aelfgifu of Northampton, was the first wife of King Canute the Great and the mother of King Harold Harefoot of England and King Sweyn Knutsson of Norway.
In 1006 Aelfhelm was murdered and his two sons blinded by Eadric Steona possibly on the order of King Aethelred the Unready, because the family had allied with the Danes.
