Eadgifu of Wessex Short Biography

Eadgifu of Wessex Family Tree

Eadgifu of Wessex was born around 902, the daughter of King Edward the Elder by his second wife Aelfflaed of Mercia. Around 917 she married Charles III of France after the death of his first wife, Frederuna. They had one son, Louis.

After being defeated at the Battle of Soissons in June 923 by Rudolph / Ralph, son of the Duke of Burgundy, Charles III was deposed and taken prisoner. Eadgifu fled to England with her son, Louis where they were given sanctuary and protection by Eadgifu’s half-brother, King Aethelstan.

Charles III of France died, in captivity, in 929 making Eadgifu a widow and Louis rightful heir to the throne of France. In 936, Rudolph / Ralph of France died and Louis was summoned to return to France to take his rightful place as King. He was crowned in Raon the same year.

In 936, Eadgifu entered a convent. In 951 she was abducted by Herbert of Omois who then married her. Louis died in 954 and was succeeded by his eldest son Lothair. Eadgifu died around 955.
