Wulfrun of York Short Biography
Very little is known of Wulfrun’s life. She is known to history through being the wife of Aelfhelm of York and the mother of Aelfgifu of Northampton who became the first wife of King Canute.
Wulfrun and Aelfhelm had three children. As Eldorman of York / South Northumbria, Aelfhelm made peace with the Vikings. This put him out of favour with King Aethelred the Unready. Aethelm was murdered and Wulfrun’s two sons were blinded by Eadric Streona, most likely on the order of the King.
Aelfgifu later became the first wife of King Canute the Great and the mother of King Harold Harefoot, of England and King Sweyn Knutsson of Norway.
Canute became King of England in 1016 and the following year set Aelfgifu aside in order to marry Emma of Normandy.
It is not known when Wulfrun died.
